5 study tips I find useful

I have always loved studying and learning new things. Recently, I have started a qualification through my workplace and I am loving being a student again. I am surprised how easily I have reverted back to that work and revising mind set. Different to when I was younger I am not just studying, I am working and I am also trying to fit in family friends and blogging. Trying to find the balance can be tricky, but after 3 months of studying so far I think I have been finding the right balance between it all. I thought I would share some useful tips I have been using to help me be as productive and successful as I can.

Plan my day/week with my Happy Planner

To make proper use of my time, I plan my week out using my Happy Planner. This is definitely not an AD but I would highly recommend these planners, it has been so helpful with planning out my weeks. I will write down all my commitments and then schedule in time for studying and for working on my blog. That saying “Failing to plan, is planning to fail” is so true! I try to plan as much as possible to ensure I have the time to fit in studying and to revise. If I don’t plan, I only end up stressing myself out and that means I am not focused.

Take breaks

I always make sure I take breaks especially if I have allocated a block of time to study, this keeps me focused and means I do not start procrastinating and start cleaning something instead because I can’t read another module haha! I’ll either watch some tv or spend some time on my phone catching up on social media. I find I am so much more productive when I work this way.

Set mini goals

I like to set mini goals such as complete one more task and then I can have a break or complete half of the module by the end of today. I like to break big goals down into mini goals to keep me productive and not to feel overwhelmed. They are manageable.

Treat/Reward yourself

When I am constantly working on an assignment or I have a big work load, I like to take time to treat/reward myself after completing the goals/targets I have set. Rewarding myself can be anything from taking a nice long bath, a face mask or go out with family or friends. Just to remember to take breaks and have some fun, so I have a healthy balance between work and play.

Do what is best for you

Everybody learns differently and so it is important you find the right style that brings out your most productive work. For me, I work best when I am writing down information down, revision cards and mind maps etc. More colour the better, which is where my inner stationery geek comes out and I can use highlighters and different coloured pens.

  1. I love the idea of breaking down big goals into smaller ones- definitely one way to stay motivated! I also love to take regular breaks and sometimes I even time my work load and then time a break so it keeps me focused and then I work towards that break haha xx

  2. These are fantastic tips Lauren! I’m not studying anymore, but when I was I was also all about the revision cards, colourful notes and making mind maps, I think I enjoyed that more than the actual course, he he! Taking breaks are so important, I found that I got to a certain point and I just couldn’t take in any more information, so I went for a walk or had a bath and felt refreshed again. I really admire that you are working, blogging and studying, you are doing amazing! Also, where did you get the washi from in your planner?   3. great tips! i haven’t been a student for a few years now but these are all the things i would have done in school. planning out my day was the most important thing for me. i’d even schedule in shower breaks so i had something to look forward to xx

  4. I’m so bad with taking breaks! My mind always thinks that taking breaks is bad and I could use that time to get ahead but in reality, my brain is tired and needs to refuel even if it was a 10-20 minute break. Rewards are always what I look forward to! Thank you for sharing Lauren xx

  5. These are some great tips. I’m not studying at the moment but swore by colourful notes, highlighted and mind maps in college. I’ve also adopted some of these practices in my daily working life, especially in seminars or meetings. I think taking regular breaks and reward yourself afterwards are vital, if only to prevent burn out.
