Journaling has always been a huge part of my life from such a young age. I would have those ‘secret’ diaries where you would have a padlock and key, which lets face it a hair pin and a little wiggle and it was open. Nothing that secret about that! But I always enjoyed writing in a diary, whether it was recording what I did that day to who I had a crush on when I was at school. I still have one of the diaries I kept and it so funny to read back, reflect on good times and see how much I have grown since that time.
Journaling for me is now such a powerful practice to help my physical and mental health, not only to be able to look back on with fond memories. Journaling gives me the chance to get everything out of my head onto paper and that practice alone is so therapeutic.
What I have grown more into is using journal prompts, whether that is in addition to daily journaling or instead of. Journaling prompts allow me to explore my self-identity and can help me to gain clarity about certain topics or situations. I think journaling prompts are great to come back to and see whether your response and thoughts are the same as a year or 5 years from then.
